ARTIST STATEMENT

My work stems from the hidden beauty and process of everyday routines. Taking inspiration from my everyday life, I aim to show how obsessive these can be and how they may begin to hinder rather than help us. I aim to make people more aware of the things they take for granted and the routines they cling to because society says we should such as brushing our teeth, showering or sleeping. The obsessive nature of this is mirrored through the monotonous task of creating the tiles for my work. The installation spaces aim to show people the enormity of the small things which can be easily ignored or forgotten.

To convey these ideas, I use photography and installation to create immersive spaces in which to make the audience more aware of themselves and less of the people and environment around them. The use of such personal moments in the day may allow for the audience to make their own connections to their personal life and habits. The use of the mirrors throughout my installations allow for self-reflection from the audience on their own mornings.

I see my work sited next to artists such as Peter Funch and Tracey Emin. Funch looks into the mundane and repetition throughout our everyday lives using photography to show how people change from day to day, whereas Emin uses installation to show how we keep parts of our lives hidden from view due to the uncleanliness and private nature of the objects on show.

Alongside completing my BA (Hons) Fine Art degree at the University of Derby I have continued to expand my photographic portfolio. To do this I have taken any opportunities which have arisen such as different commissions and commercial work. Photography has always been a passion of mine and to be able to use this throughout my practice has allowed me to expand my skills, learn more about the technical possibilities of my camera's and show audiences how I see the world.
